Well known for his love of children and almost miraculous
way with animals, Russell was an avid fisherman, crabber and boater who loved
the Chesapeake. A graduate of DC's Wilson High School, he served in the Army
from 1964 to 1966, and was discharged as an SP4. As an employee of the Army's
Harry Diamond Lab for 34½ years, he was given a special commendation for his
conscientiousness, independent initiative and overall excellence working on the
M732 PIP, MAP and Chapparal Fuze programs. He retired in 1994, and started his
own heating /air conditioning business, serving most of Maryland, often doing
pro bono work for those in need.
Russell was the Vice President of the Long Beach Civic Association and long-time Board member. Both Russell and Jane were recognized by the LBCA in 1999 for their outstanding and almost unlimited volunteer services to their community. Russell also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Flag Harbor Yacht Haven. Care was provided by Calvert Hospice and many caring friends and neighbors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society and/or the American Heart Association. A memorial celebration of his life was held at Flag Harbor Marina on July 7th to share pictures, stories and memories of this remarkable man. Contributed By Mieke Rockhill) |
